Climate Change FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

We will be constantly developing this resource on our website, and will be pleased to address in this area questions which are raised about the e)mission service or carbon neutralisation in general.

e)mission service

Do you plant trees as part of your offset strategy?

e)mission will specifically avoid forestry projects, as offsets generated from forestry suffer from a number of flaws and may not lead to real atmospheric greenhouse gas reductions:

  • It is difficult to assess with any certainty how much carbon a tree actually absorbs over the course of its life.
  • If a tree dies and is burnt or decomposes, most of the carbon it has absorbed is released into the atmosphere again, which could make the climate situation worse rather than better.
  • Trees live for up to 100 years. Ensuring that forests are managed effectively over this kind of timescale is almost impossible to guarantee due to the likelihood of unforeseen issues and changes.
  • There is simply not enough land area available to offset all emissions, so this can never be a long-term solution.

We regularly review the scientific consensus on issues directly affecting our projects. For more information go to Our Projects.

Does e)mission provides CERs or VERs?

We supply both certified emission reductions under the Kyoto Protocol (CERs) and verified emission reductions (VERs), from our own managed projects and through our extensive network in the market. We can supply CERs if you wish to purchase a high volume of emission reductions.

Who are your clients?

We provide emission reductions for all sizes of business. We have experience in running a wide range of carbon management programmes. Take a look at our clients list to find out more.

Why should my company take responsibility?

To be successful in business it is vital to be aware of the emergence of big issues and how to manage these within your business strategy. Today the world is waking up to climate change and the importance of cutting CO2 emissions. There is increasing pressure to show that your company is switched on to the issue, from a wide variety of stakeholders; from investors and customers to your own employees.

Companies are being challenged to take responsibility for their impact on the climate today and understand how business will work in the low carbon world of tomorrow. We can help you manage carbon in your company.

Do you meet industry standards?

Our projects follow the same robust process of design, monitoring and independent verification as set down by the UN’s Clean Development Mechanism. They also meet a recognised international standard for emission reductions.

We are developing projects to comply with the CDM, Gold Standard VER, Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS).

We use the Gold Standard VER wherever possible. Crucially, Gold Standard VER projects take time to develop. Currently very few projects have yet reached Gold Standard registration stage. The Gold Standard website provides useful further information on its standards.

All projects are backed by a Project Design Document (PDD) which sets out the project boundary, baseline, purpose, benefits, and projected savings. Verification of the projects’ goals is undertaken by the accrediting body.

Can you demonstrate that your offsets are not sold to multiple buyers?

We operate the e)mission Carbon Registry. This is a register organised on the basis of each offset project and the tonnes of CO2 saving that it generates. Each client is allocated the appropriate tonnage in the register [....]

Can we claim carbon neutrality through your service?

If you are looking to claim carbon neutrality please note that you should ensure your carbon footprint has been calculated according to WRI/WBCSD Greenhouse Gas Protocol and/or ISO 14064-1.

Do you have ability to scale up for significant volumes?

Yes, we have the flexibility to evolve with the market without compromising our standards and values. We have a long-term strategy for a programmatic approach to emission reductions, developing international strategic partnerships at a government level with the aim of providing systematic, country-wide programmes for low emission, sustainable development.

If you require a high volume of emission reductions we will use our expertise and global reach to source projects to suit your requirements and scale.

Can I choose the projects my company invests in?

Making reductions through a portfolio, rather than a single project, enables us to effectively manage risk of delivery. We reduce emissions for most companies using our General Portfolio of projects. The portfolio also provides a range of engaging stories you can use for your customers. However we are very happy to build bespoke project portfolios if you wish to purchase a high volume of emission reductions. Please contact us for more information.

What does Additionality means?

In order to be considered as a bona fide offset, a project must only have gone ahead because of the funding provided by the sale of carbon credits. If the project is viable in its own right, say through the sale of electricity, then it cannot be used as an offset project as it would have been built regardless of your investment. So Additionality means the concept that the project is additional to the “business as usual” scenario; it has only happened because of carbon funding.

How do you audit your projects?

Our projects are externally audited by a range of third party accreditation bodies. In addition, all e)mission projects are accredited by either the Gold Standard VER, the Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS), pre-CDM or the Social Carbon Standard.

Are offsets from the regulated or voluntary market?

Our offsets are predominantly from the voluntary market. However we also offer our clients the opportunity to offset via CERs (Certified Emission Reductions). Almost without exception, our commercial clients are not interested in CER projects. This is because of recognition that CER/EUA generating projects do not generate the range of co-benefits that typically accrue from voluntary offset projects.

What is renewable energy?

Renewable energy is energy that comes from an unlimited power source, such as wind and solar. Renewable energy is also clean energy, which means negligible greenhouse gases are released in the production of electricity from renewable energy compared with fossil fuels.

I already buy renewable energy through my electricity supplier. Why do I need e)mission?

It’s great that you are already buying renewable energy for your home or business and making a contribution to the solution for global warming. e)mission can help you to offset the greenhouse gas emissions from driving your car, from air travel, or from an event...
