EDP and e)mission make this Christmas a little greener

03-12-2011

The traditional EDP sponsored Christmas tree, glittering at the Lisbon Zoo, is once again e)mission neutral certified®.

By using innovative technology and by changing the way this campaign is organized, EDP reduced by over 99% the carbon footprint of Lisbon´s largest illuminated christmas tree, and unavoidable emissions were entirely offest.

The carbon footprint of the Christmas tree has been declining since 2009 (23.11 tons of CO2eq) until the present (0.09 tons of CO2eq). This big decline is due primarily to the change of lighting technology, which last year involved LED lighting (more energy efficient) and a smaller tree, relative to the that deployed in "Parque Eduardo VII” in 2009, then Europe´s largest illuminated christmas tree (see news here).

e)mission´s carbon footprint calculation took into consideration the impact from different emission sources, such as energy consumption by the LEDs used to illuminate the tree during the 34 days´ operating time, and fuel consumption used by the crane to assemble and disassemble the tree - there were no transport emissions.

EDP assumed its policy of  environmental responsibility, offsetting the carbon emissions resulting from the lighting of the Christmas tree at the Lisbon Zoo (90 kg CO2 eq).
