Climate responsibility in Corporate meetings

09-06-2011

The African Development Bank, an Iternational Financial Institution, chosen e)mission to ensure its Annual Meetings for 2011 were carbon neutral.

The carbon footprint study of this annual meeting was calculated by e)mission based on the vast experience of other major events and also, using innovative tools for the calculation of the carbon footprint associated with the air travel of the delegates. The carbon footprint accounting considered the flights of 330 delegates of the African Development Bank, local mobility, accommodation and catering, distribution of materials, water consumption and waste products.

A carbon footprint of 689.3 tonnes of CO2eq was determined for this event.  The African Development Bank took the lead by fully offsetting this carbon impact using carbon credits from a project to support composting in South Africa. This project aims to compost green wastes collected in the municipality of Cape town, producing in a controlled way humus to be used to restore the fertility of agricultural soils and at the same time raise awareness for environmental responsibility. The project avoids methane gas emissions to the atmosphere.
