e)mission news
BES Planet on Facebook is Banco Espirito Santo´s (BES) digital platform for communicating its sustainability initiatives, including social solidarity, innovation, financial literacy, biodiversity, cultural sponsorship and micro credit. Fittingly, this Facebook account is now e)mission neutral certified. The carbon emissions resulting from the energy consumption of the Facebook servers and Planeta BES "friends" was accounted and offset by retiring carbon credits from e)misison´s portfolio.
BES is Portugal´s largest private bank by market capitalization; it is a FTSE4GOOD listed company and has been distinguised on the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index.
The carbon footprint of the “Planeta BES” Facebook page (19kg of CO2eq) was offset by carbon credits from a Small Hydro Power Plant in Honduras - this project contributes to rural electrification with a renewable, sustainable source of energy, contributes to local employment and a series of other social benefits, and reduces carbon emissions relative to the "business as usual" scenario, which would be the use of diesel or fueloil powered generators. These carbon credits are included in the e)mission portfolio, which supports projects that simultaneously contribute to the sustainable development of communities and reduce the climate impact.
