e)mission establishes carbon account at Markit Environmental Registry

28-02-2011

In 2010 e)mission became one of very few services in the Iberian Peninsula to hold an account with Markit Environmental Registry, the world´s leading environmental assets registry.

Access2 Carbon Markets, which developed and oversees e)mission services at international level, uses Markit Environmental Registry as part of its demanding Quality Assurance procedure.  All carbon credits receive a unique reference number so they may be monitored through their entire life-cycle.  Retired credits (carbon credits which have already been used for offsets) are held and can be viewed on the registry, ensuring the same credits are not re-issued or sold at a later date.

Markit Environmental Registry won the Financial Services Technology (FST) Award for Environmental Initiative of the Year in 2010.  The FST Award aims to recognize excellence and innovation in information technology.  It was also selected as Best Environmental Registry by readers of Environmental Finance.

e)mission´s Quality Assurance process differentiates its carbon offset programme from other neutralization services.  In addition to the scrutiny of the Environmental Steering Committee, which advises on Ethics, Environment and Scientific issues related to e)mission´s carbon offset portfolio, its carbon registries are subject to an annual verification procedure by KPMG, and the annual reports are provided online.

The aim is to provide existing and prospective clients with the security that the emissions reductions they are standing behind are real and accountable, and to inform and help shape a responsible and credible voluntary carbon market.
