Puigpunyent Municipality, Mallorca, offset carbon emissions of their magazine ECOMPOSTA

03-02-2011

The officials of the Puigpunyent Municipality of Mallorca are aware that the environment is one of the main challenges for the XXI century, and for this reason they are carrying out several actions in order to protect the local environment.

Within these actions, a highlight is the production of materials for diffusion of knowledge about environmental issues. Among these materials there is the municipal magazine ECOMPOSTA with the main purpose of becoming a useful tool that will enable citizens to implement several individual small and daily actions and that at the same time will allow them to be constantly updated with the latest news and reports about waste management and recycling, climate change and other topics of general interest.

In this context, the officials of the Puigpunyent Municipality have decided to do something more that makes it possible to reduce the environmental impact related to the magazine, and has offset all carbon emissions of the first edition of the ECOMPOSTA, so that it can be awarded the e)mission neutral certification.

e)mission calculated the carbon footprint of this first edition to be 0.34 tonnes of CO2eq.

The measurement of the carbon footprint accounted for emissions associated to energy consumption, travels, edition and production of the magazine, considering its main characteristics (materials, dimensions, number of units, etc).

The offset of all emissions was carried out through e)mission’s platform and its project portfolio that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and generate high quality carbon credits, and also contribute for the sustainability of the countries where they are being developed, providing economic, environmental and social benefits.

Through this offset, the Puigpunyent Municipality has achieved emission neutrality for its first number of the ECOMPOSTA magazine.
